Give the whole day to the open-air museum: ride trams between the 1900s town, pit village, farms and 1950s streets, and eat in one of its period cafes. On the way home, stretch legs on a short gorge walk to the world's oldest surviving single-arch railway bridge.

    Causey Arch Picnic Area

Short woodland loop to view the 1720s arch; free car park.

A wooded gorge walk to the world's oldest surviving single-arch railway bridge, built in the 1720s for coal wagons. Free parking, picnic spots and short circular paths make it a cheap add-on to Beamish or Tanfield Railway, which runs right past it.
